Curfew Enforced to Prevent Further Unrest

Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal issued an order enforcing restrictions across various parts of the city. The curfew applies to police station jurisdictions in Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar.

As per reports, around 22 police personnel were injured, and 65 protesters have been detained following violent demonstrations. The order will remain in effect until further notice to curb any escalation.

How the Violence Began?

The protests started on March 17, when 200-250 members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal, Nagpur, demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. The demonstrators chanted slogans and carried a symbolic green cloth filled with cow dung cakes to express their protest.

Later, another group of 80-100 people assembled in Bhaldarpura, further escalating tensions. Clashes broke out, leading to incidents of stone-pelting, vehicle torching, and vandalism in Nagpur’s Hansapuri area.

What the Curfew Order States?

The official order restricts public movement and prohibits gatherings of more than five people. It also warns against spreading rumors or engaging in unlawful activities.

During the curfew:
* No one can leave their house except for medical emergencies.
* Government employees, police officers, students appearing for essential exams, and fire brigade personnel are exempted.
* Violators will face punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Political Reactions & Law Enforcement Measures

Authorities have sealed roads and conducted combing operations in the Mahal area, which houses the RSS headquarters. So far, 15 people have been arrested.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari have appealed for peace, while the opposition has criticized the government over the deteriorating law and order situation.

The violence allegedly stemmed from rumors that the holy book of the Muslim community was burned during the protests. However, police officials have yet to confirm these claims.

Current Situation in Nagpur

Law enforcement remains on high alert, ensuring strict curfew enforcement and monitoring sensitive areas. The Maharashtra government has urged citizens to maintain peace and avoid spreading misinformation.

As the situation unfolds, residents await further updates from the authorities.
