Meta’s Facebook and Instagram Hit by Widespread Outage, Thousands of Users Report Access Issues

Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread service disruption on Sunday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the platforms normally.

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports of problems surged during the morning hours. In the United States, more than 4,800 Facebook users reported issues by around 07:46 GMT, with nearly two-thirds of complaints linked to the website not loading properly. Instagram also saw a spike in reports, with over 2,800 users flagging problems with the app shortly after.

Users Across Multiple Regions Affected

The disruption was not limited to the United States. Users in several countries reported intermittent access to Facebook and Instagram, with some unable to refresh their feeds, while others encountered temporary error messages or login issues. Reuters also observed inconsistent access to both platforms in Singapore during the outage.

Many users took to alternative social media platforms to confirm whether the issue was widespread, with reports indicating that the outage affected both the mobile apps and web versions of Facebook and Instagram.

Meta Yet to Issue an Official Statement

At the time of reporting, Meta had not issued an official explanation for the disruption. The company also did not immediately respond to media requests seeking comment on the cause of the outage.

Downdetector Data Reflects User Reports

It’s worth noting that Downdetector collects outage information from user-submitted reports. As a result, the actual number of affected users may be higher or lower than the figures displayed on the platform.

The exact reason behind the outage remains unclear, and it is not yet known how many users were impacted globally. Services appeared to recover gradually for some users as outage reports began declining later in the day.
