India have received a boost ahead of the third and final One-Day International against Afghanistan, with fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana rejoining the national squad after successfully completing his rehabilitation from a knee injury.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Friday that the 24-year-old has linked up with the team in Chennai ahead of the series finale at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Harshit Rana Makes Comeback After Lengthy Injury Layoff
Rana has been out of competitive action for several months following a knee injury sustained before the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The all-rounder suffered a ligament strain in his right knee during a warm-up fixture against South Africa and was forced to leave the field shortly after beginning his spell.
Subsequent medical assessments led to surgery, ruling him out of the T20 World Cup as well as the entire IPL 2026 season.
His return marks the end of a challenging recovery period and provides India with an additional pace-bowling option ahead of a busy international calendar.
India Eye Clean Sweep Against Afghanistan
India have already secured the ODI series after victories in the opening two matches and will now be aiming for a 3-0 whitewash when they take on Afghanistan in Chennai.
The hosts produced convincing performances in both Dharamsala and Lucknow, allowing the team management an opportunity to assess squad depth before upcoming overseas assignments.
Rana’s inclusion could give the coaching staff a chance to evaluate his fitness and form before India’s next international engagements.
Strong Record in Limited Opportunities
Despite being relatively new to international cricket, Rana has shown promise in the ODI format. The right-arm pacer has featured in 14 One-Day Internationals, picking up 16 wickets while maintaining an average of 27.38.
His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable asset in India’s limited-overs setup.
The youngster last represented India during the T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year before injury interrupted his progress.
Selected for Ireland and England Tours
Rana’s return to full fitness has also earned him a place in India’s squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England. The tours will see India play a seven-match T20I series as preparations continue for future global tournaments.
With the injury setback now behind him, the all-rounder will be looking to make the most of his opportunities and cement his place in India’s white-ball plans over the coming months.
