Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump shared a strong personal bond, which was evident in their past meetings and public statements. Their friendship was highlighted during Modi’s visit to the U.S., where Trump praised him as “a very special man” and recalled the warm welcome he received in India during his 2020 visit.

Both leaders frequently spoke about their close relationship during Trump’s first term. Trump emphasized that the U.S.-India friendship had reached its strongest point, calling it the best relationship ever between the two nations. Modi, in return, expressed gratitude for Trump’s support and recalled the positive memories of his visit to India.

Trump also commented on India’s ties with the Biden administration, suggesting that the relationship had been strained. He mentioned various issues that arose between India and the U.S. under Biden’s leadership. Modi, however, highlighted the trust built during Trump’s first term, which he said helped in their discussions.

Their camaraderie extended beyond diplomacy, with Trump joking that Modi was a tougher negotiator than him during trade talks. Modi also playfully remarked that Trump had a “copyright” on the term EV (electric vehicles), referencing his discussions with Elon Musk.

The warmth between the two leaders was once again evident when Trump greeted Modi at the White House, even pulling out a chair for him. Their strong personal connection played a significant role in shaping U.S.-India ties and could influence future diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
