Mohammed Siraj Dropped for England ODIs and ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj exclusion from the ODI squad for the upcoming series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has raised eyebrows. The squads were announced by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar on Saturday in Mumbai. Siraj, a consistent presence in India’s playing XI recently, was notably absent from the list. His last appearance was in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

Instead, the selectors opted for Arshdeep Singh, alongside Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, as the three seamers in the squad. However, Bumrah’s inclusion remains subject to fitness, adding an element of uncertainty to the bowling lineup.

Siraj’s Recent Form

Siraj has been one of India’s standout bowlers in ODIs. In 2023, he claimed 44 wickets in the format, including 14 during the ICC World Cup, where India narrowly missed out on the trophy after losing in the final. Despite this, Siraj featured in only three ODIs in 2024, and his limited appearances may have influenced the selection decision.

With Harshit Rana named as Bumrah’s backup for the England series, there is speculation that the Delhi pacer could also replace Bumrah in the Champions Trophy squad if the latter fails to regain fitness in time.

Why Was Siraj Omitted?

Indian captain Rohit Sharma shed light on the decision during the squad announcement, attributing Siraj’s exclusion to his reduced effectiveness when not bowling with the new ball.

“It’s unfortunate he (Siraj) has to miss out. Siraj’s effectiveness comes down when not bowling with the new ball,” Rohit explained.

The selectors prioritized players who can perform specific roles across all phases of the game. Rohit added, “We wanted guys who can bowl with the new ball, and be effective in the middle overs and at the back end. With these three boys (Shami, Harshit, and Arshdeep), we can achieve that.”

What’s Next for Siraj?

Siraj’s exclusion underscores the fierce competition within the Indian pace attack. With his proven ability to deliver in key moments, he remains a strong contender for future tournaments. However, for now, the spotlight will be on Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and the returning Jasprit Bumrah to spearhead India’s campaign in England and the Champions Trophy.

The decision to leave out Siraj reflects India’s strategic planning for challenging English conditions, but only time will tell if this gamble pays off.
