Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal, the former Indian Army officer who became popular online as the “national crush”, is once again drawing attention after news of his early retirement surfaced.

Sambyal completed nearly 12 years in the Indian Army and served in some highly regarded assignments during his career. Among his most prominent roles was serving as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to President Droupadi Murmu.

His decision to leave military service at the age of 30 has raised questions about his career, his time with the President and what prompted him to take premature retirement.

Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal: Early Life and Education

Sambyal comes from a Dogra Rajput family with roots in Jammu and Kashmir.

His military journey began after he cleared the NDA examination in 2013. He subsequently joined the 133rd NDA course in 2014.

He completed his graduation in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Affairs. He later attended the Indian Military Academy, where his studies included Military Studies and Defence Management.

A 12-Year Career in the Indian Army

Over approximately 12 years in uniform, Sambyal progressed through different ranks and responsibilities before reaching the rank of Major.

One of the memorable moments of his service came during the 2021 Republic Day Parade, when he led the Jat Regiment contingent.

The contingent received the Best Marching Contingent Trophy, adding another major achievement to his military record.

Sambyal also served with 4 Para Special Forces, an elite unit of the Indian Army commonly referred to as the “Daggers”. His service with the unit included earning the Balidaan Badge, which is associated with qualified Special Forces personnel.

Rishabh Singh Sambyal as President Droupadi Murmu’s ADC

Sambyal’s military career took a significant turn when he was selected as an Aide-de-Camp to President Droupadi Murmu in March 2023, according to his LinkedIn profile.

An ADC works closely with a senior official and handles a combination of protocol, coordination and operational responsibilities.

The position also meant that Sambyal was frequently present during the President’s official engagements.

Why Did Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal Leave the Army?

The question surrounding Sambyal’s retirement has generated significant interest, particularly because he left the Army at only 30.

Reports quoting an Instagram Live interaction suggest that personal and family reasons were behind his decision.

Sambyal indicated that certain experiences and circumstances in life can bring about major changes in one’s plans.

He also reportedly addressed speculation about marriage, saying that there were no immediate marriage plans. Beyond these comments, he has not publicly revealed detailed information about the circumstances that led to his premature retirement.

Sambyal Reveals What It Was Like to Protect the President

After serving as President Murmu’s ADC, Sambyal shared several details about presidential security during an appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast.

He explained that security around the President involves constant vigilance, with even routine interactions being carefully assessed.

According to Sambyal, people are not simply allowed to approach the President and touch her feet or shake her hand because security personnel cannot know the intentions of every individual.

He also discussed the precautions taken with everyday items. Even something as ordinary as a glass of water, he explained, can require attention because security teams must ensure that nothing harmful has been introduced.

How Large Is the Security Zone Around the President?

Sambyal also spoke about the security arrangements surrounding the President during public movements.

He said an area extending to around one kilometre can be sanitised around the President, depending on the situation. Restrictions may be imposed on weapons, metal objects and other potentially dangerous items.

His revelations provided an unusual look at the level of planning required for presidential security.

What Does an ADC Actually Do?

Being an ADC is not limited to accompanying the President at public events.

Sambyal explained that an ADC is responsible for dealing with a wide range of presidential requirements, including official coordination.

For example, if President Murmu wanted to speak with the Prime Minister, the ADC could coordinate with the relevant officials and help establish the communication.

The job therefore requires constant alertness, discipline and effective communication.

What Did Sambyal Say About His First Meeting With President Murmu?

Sambyal has spoken respectfully about his relationship with President Droupadi Murmu.

Describing his first meeting with her, he recalled feeling as though his mother was standing in front of him.

The remark reflected the respect he developed for the President during his tenure as her ADC.

Why Is Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal Called the ‘National Crush’?

Sambyal’s military background, appearance and social-media presence have made him a popular figure among online audiences.

The “national crush” tag became associated with him as photographs and videos from his Army career and presidential assignment circulated widely on social media.

However, behind the social-media attention is a military career that included service with an elite Special Forces unit, participation in the Republic Day Parade and an important assignment with the President of India.
