Fugitive businessman and Indian Premier League (IPL) founder Lalit Modi has stirred controversy again by sharing pictures from Vanuatu, an island nation that recently moved to cancel his citizenship. Modi, who surrendered his Indian passport at the High Commission in London, had acquired Vanuatu’s citizenship but is now facing fresh legal troubles.
Lalit Modi in Vanuatu: A Luxurious Escape?
On Monday, Modi posted images from Vanuatu on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), praising the country’s beauty.
“Vanuatu is a beautiful country. You must put it on your bucket list. Away from all the pollution and noise. Truly a heavenly country,” he wrote.
Despite Vanuatu’s move to cancel his newly acquired passport, Modi appears to be residing there. His post has raised eyebrows as authorities in Vanuatu proceed with legal action.
Vanuatu PM Orders Cancellation of Lalit Modi Citizenship
In response to the controversy, Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat announced strict action against Modi.
“I have instructed the Citizenship Commission to immediately begin proceedings to cancel Lalit Modi’s Vanuatu passport,” said PM Napat in an official statement.
This decision follows concerns over Modi’s past legal issues and his status as a fugitive economic offender in India.
India Pursuit of Lalit Modi Continues
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that legal proceedings against Lalit Modi will continue, even after his shift to Vanuatu.
“India will continue to pursue the case against Modi,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Modi has been wanted in India since 2010 after being summoned by the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged forex violations related to a broadcast deal for the 2009 IPL held in South Africa. However, he fled to the UK in 2010 and has been residing there until his recent move to Vanuatu.

With Vanuatu authorities moving to cancel his citizenship, Modi might have to seek legal options or another country for refuge. Meanwhile, Indian authorities continue efforts to bring him back for trial.
