The Eaton Fire raging across the Angeles National Forest, Altadena, and Pasadena has rapidly expanded to 10,600 acres, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake, authorities reported Wednesday morning.

Tragic Losses and Damage

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that five people have lost their lives. In a press conference, Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) Chief Anthony Marrone reported numerous injuries and over 100 structures destroyed. Later updates from Pasadena Fire Chief Chad Augustin revealed that between 200-500 buildings had been damaged or destroyed.

Evacuation Orders and Shelters

Evacuation orders have been issued for over 52,000 residents in Altadena, Arcadia, Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and La Cañada Flintridge. Another 47,000 residents are under evacuation warnings. Key evacuation centers include:

  • Pasadena Convention Center: 300 E. Green St., Pasadena.
  • Arcadia Community Center: 365 Campus Dr., Arcadia.
  • El Camino Real Charter High School and Westwood Recreation Center are also available for evacuees.

Pasadena Transit and other emergency vehicles are assisting in evacuations, including transporting residents of elderly living facilities to safety.

  • Glendale Unified School District: All campuses closed.

Challenging Weather Conditions

Southern California is battling one of its worst windstorms in decades, with gusts reaching up to 100 mph. These conditions have grounded water-dropping aircraft, further complicating firefighting efforts.

Additional Fires Across Southern California

  • Pacific Palisades: A wildfire has torched over 2,900 acres and destroyed several structures.
  • Sylmar: The Hurst Fire forced evacuations near Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
  • Hollywood Hills: The Sunset Fire erupted near Runyon Canyon, growing to over 20 acres and prompting evacuations.

Firefighting resources across the region are stretched thin, with off-duty firefighters being called in to assist.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
