Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Review: Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju Shine in a Refreshing Romance

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit brings Nivin Pauly back to the romance genre, but this time the story takes a quieter and more grounded route. Directed by Girish AD, the Malayalam film focuses less on grand romantic gestures and more on everyday emotions, family relationships and the little moments that gradually bring two people closer.

The film stars Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, with an ensemble supporting cast adding plenty of humour and warmth to the narrative.

A Simple Story With Relatable Characters

The story is set in Mundakayam, Kerala, where Ashley, played by Mamitha Baiju, lives with her family. Her comfortable routine changes when her parents decide to move to Ernakulam.

For Ashley, the move means leaving behind her college friends, music band and many personal belongings that carry memories from her childhood. She arrives in her new surroundings feeling disconnected and struggles to adjust to her new life.

Things become more interesting when she gets to know her neighbours. Among them is Justin, played by Nivin Pauly, a man in his mid-30s who remains unmarried and has an easy-going but somewhat lonely personality.

An Unusual Romance Takes Shape

Ashley and Justin’s relationship develops gradually rather than through the usual cinematic romance formula. Their connection begins with small conversations and everyday encounters, eventually developing into an unlikely relationship with a noticeable age difference.

What works in the film’s favour is that the age gap is not treated simply as a source of jokes or unnecessary drama. Instead, Girish AD uses it to explore how two people deal with attraction, uncertainty and social expectations.

The romance feels more natural because the characters are given time to understand their feelings. Their relationship grows through ordinary situations rather than dramatic declarations of love.

Nivin Pauly Delivers a Natural Performance

Nivin Pauly is one of the film’s biggest strengths. As Justin, he balances humour, vulnerability and awkwardness with considerable ease.

Justin is not portrayed as a perfect romantic hero. His casual lifestyle, friendships and moments of loneliness make him feel more like a real person than a conventional movie character. Nivin’s natural comic timing also adds several enjoyable moments to the film.

Mamitha Baiju complements him well as Ashley. Her performance feels spontaneous and understated, allowing the character’s emotions to develop naturally throughout the story.

Girish AD’s Slice-of-Life Approach Works

Girish AD once again demonstrates his ability to find stories in ordinary lives. Instead of relying heavily on melodrama, the director creates a lively neighbourhood filled with different personalities, family members and friends.

The supporting characters are not merely present in the background. Their quirks and interactions add humour while also helping create the film’s warm atmosphere.

This detailed portrayal of everyday life is one of the movie’s strongest elements. The audience gets the feeling of spending time inside this small community rather than simply watching a romantic story unfold.

Final Verdict

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is a warm and easy-going romantic drama that chooses simplicity over spectacle. The film’s biggest achievement is its ability to make an unconventional relationship feel believable without unnecessarily sensationalising it.

Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju share an appealing chemistry, while Girish AD’s attention to everyday characters gives the film its distinctive charm.

If you enjoy Malayalam slice-of-life cinema, realistic romance and character-driven stories, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is worth considering.
