The Board of Control for Cricket in India has officially announced India’s schedule for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka national cricket team, confirming the team’s next assignment in the ongoing 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
The series marks India’s first Test tour of Sri Lanka in nine years, with the last red-ball series between the two teams in the island nation taking place in 2017.

Earlier reports suggested that the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket were considering adding limited-overs matches to the tour. However, the official schedule released by both cricket boards includes only the two-Test series, with no ODI or T20I fixtures announced.
India’s Return to Sri Lanka After 2017
India last played a Test series in Sri Lanka in 2017 under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. The visitors dominated the three-match contest, completing a 3-0 clean sweep.
That squad featured players such as Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, while only KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav remain in contention for India’s current Test setup.
Important WTC Assignment for Shubman Gill’s India
Led by Shubman Gill, India will be looking to improve their standing in the World Test Championship.
The team heads into the Sri Lanka series after suffering a 0-2 home defeat against South Africa national cricket team last year. Although India also played a one-off Test against Afghanistan national cricket team following IPL 2026, that match was not part of the WTC.
So far in the 2025-27 WTC cycle, India have:
- Drawn 2-2 against England away
- Defeated West Indies 2-0 at home
- Lost 0-2 to South Africa
India currently sit fifth in the WTC standings with four wins from nine Tests and a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.15.
A strong performance in Sri Lanka will be crucial as India aim to strengthen their position in the race for a place in the World Test Championship Final.
