Barcelona Held to 1-1 Draw by Getafe, Atletico’s Winning Streak Ends at Leganes

Barcelona failed to capitalize on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid’s slip-up as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Getafe on Saturday. Despite Jules Kounde’s early opener, Mauro Arambarri equalized for the hosts, leaving the Catalans unable to breach Getafe’s well-organized defense.

Barcelona’s Title Hopes Stumble

The draw leaves Barcelona five points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leganes earlier in the day. Manager Hansi Flick expressed determination to keep fighting despite the setback.

“It’s not done yet… We will fight until the end,” Flick said post-match.

Kounde, who also scored midweek in the Copa del Rey, gave Barcelona a promising start, netting in the 9th minute after his initial shot was parried. However, Getafe, sitting 16th in the league, leveled in the 34th minute through Arambarri after a save from Inaki Pena.

Barcelona’s struggles at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez continued, with Robert Lewandowski and the team stifled by Getafe’s disciplined defense. Late in the game, Raphinha missed a golden chance to secure the win, hitting the side netting from close range.

Racism Allegations

Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde reported racist abuse from some home fans during the first half. The incident adds to the ongoing challenges La Liga faces regarding racism in football.

Atletico’s Winning Run Ends

In a surprising result, Atletico Madrid’s 15-match winning streak came to an end with a 1-0 loss at Leganes. Serbian defender Matija Nastasic headed in the winner early in the second half.

Atletico had a chance to equalize through a 90th-minute penalty, but Antoine Griezmann dragged his effort wide, missing the opportunity to salvage a point.

“We were low on energy… we have to keep going forwards,” said Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Despite the loss, Atletico remain atop the table, but coach Diego Simeone emphasized focusing on their upcoming Champions League clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

“Defeat is part of the game… we need to prepare ourselves for Tuesday,” Simeone stated.

La Liga’s Next Big Test

Real Madrid, sitting second, will have the chance to overtake Atletico when they face Las Palmas on Sunday. The title race remains wide open as teams battle for supremacy in the new year.
