Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from international cricket and all formats, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly 15 years. The 38-year-old shared the news through a heartfelt video on social media on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Rahane’s final appearance for India came during the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain in July 2023. Although he remained active in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), he did not return to the national team after that series.
Ajinkya Rahane Says “The Timing Is Right”
In his retirement message, Rahane reflected on the importance of timing throughout his cricket career.
“I have always relied on timing in my batting, and I have always understood its importance. Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.”
He also thanked fans, teammates, coaches, and family members who supported him throughout his journey while expressing his desire to contribute to cricket in new ways.
A Career Built on Consistency
Rahane made his international debut in 2011 after years of impressive performances in domestic cricket for Mumbai. Known for his solid technique and calm approach under pressure, he became one of India’s most reliable batters, especially in overseas conditions.
During his international career, Rahane represented India in all three formats:
- Tests: 85 matches, 5,077 runs, 12 centuries, average of 38.46
- ODIs: 90 matches, 2,962 runs
- T20Is: 20 matches, 375 runs

The Historic Australia Series That Defined His Legacy
One of the defining moments of Rahane’s career came during India’s 2020-21 Test tour of Australia.
After India suffered a heavy defeat in Adelaide and regular captain Virat Kohli returned home, Rahane took charge of the team. He responded with a brilliant century in the Melbourne Test and guided an injury-hit Indian side to a memorable 2-1 series victory, including the famous win at the Gabba.
Rahane captained India in six Test matches, remaining unbeaten as skipper with four wins and two draws, making it one of the most successful captaincy records in Indian Test cricket.
Domestic Cricket and IPL Career Continue
Even after losing his place in the national team, Rahane remained an important figure in Indian domestic cricket. He led Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023-24 season, further strengthening his reputation as a dependable leader.
