7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Nepal: Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR and North India

A powerful earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck near the Nepal-Tibet border early Monday morning, with tremors strongly felt across Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and other parts of North India.

Earthquake Details

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 6:35 AM (IST) and was centered 93 km northeast of Lobuche, a region near the Khumbu Glacier in Nepal. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the epicenter at latitude 28.86°N and longitude 87.51°E, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Impact and Aftershocks

Residents in Bihar and other northern states reported feeling the tremors, prompting many to rush out of their homes. However, no damage to property has been reported so far.

  • Follow-Up Tremors:
    • A magnitude 4.7 earthquake was recorded at 7:02 AM IST at a depth of 10 kilometers.
    • Another magnitude 4.9 tremor occurred at 7:07 AM IST, this time at a depth of 30 kilometers.

Seismically Active Zone

Nepal lies along the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it a hotspot for seismic activity. This region, home to the majestic Himalayas, frequently experiences earthquakes, some of which have caused significant devastation in the past.

Epicenter Details: Lobuche and Xizang

Lobuche, located near the Everest Base Camp, is roughly 150 kilometers east of Kathmandu. The tremor’s impact extended to Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), as noted by the NCS.

Emergency Response

Emergency teams in both Nepal and India are monitoring the situation closely, urging people to remain calm and vigilant against potential aftershocks.
