Suryansh Shedge Earns India Call-Up After Nitish Reddy Suffers Injury Setback
India’s preparations for the upcoming T20I assignments against Ireland and England have undergone a change after all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out due to injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named Suryansh Shedge as his replacement in both squads.
The decision comes after medical examinations confirmed that Reddy will require rehabilitation following a quadriceps injury sustained during India’s recent ODI series against Afghanistan.
Nitish Reddy Ruled Out Following Medical Assessment
Reddy experienced discomfort in his left quadriceps after the third ODI against Afghanistan on June 20. Subsequent scans and evaluations revealed swelling and muscle fiber disruption, prompting the BCCI medical team to recommend an extended recovery period.
As a result, the young all-rounder will miss the T20I series against both Ireland and England and has been instructed to report to the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence for further assessment and rehabilitation.
According to reports, Reddy could be sidelined for at least four weeks, although the recovery timeline may extend depending on his progress.
Opportunity Knocks for Suryansh Shedge
The injury has opened the door for Mumbai all-rounder Suryansh Shedge, who has impressed selectors with his recent performances at the domestic and India A level.
The 23-year-old delivered consistent contributions during the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka, scoring 147 runs in five matches while also making an impact with the ball. His ability to contribute in multiple departments is believed to have strengthened his case for national selection.
Shedge had previously caught attention during Mumbai’s successful Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, where he showcased his aggressive batting style and ability to accelerate the scoring rate in the lower middle order.
India Lose Valuable All-Round Option
Reddy’s absence is another setback for the Indian team, especially given the ongoing fitness concerns surrounding senior all-rounder Hardik Pandya. The team management had viewed Reddy as a key option capable of providing balance with both bat and ball in white-ball cricket.
Since making his international debut, Reddy has featured in 10 Tests, six ODIs and four T20 Internationals, establishing himself as one of India’s promising young all-rounders.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
While initial assessments suggested the injury was not serious, further scans revealed a more significant issue than first anticipated. The immediate priority for the team management and medical staff will now be ensuring Reddy completes his rehabilitation successfully before returning to competitive cricket.
Meanwhile, Shedge will have an opportunity to make his mark on the international stage as India prepares for an important white-ball schedule in the United Kingdom.
With strong domestic performances behind him, the young Mumbai all-rounder now has a chance to prove he belongs at the highest level.
