Tamim Iqbal Appointed Interim Head of Bangladesh Cricket Board After Government Dissolves Existing Panel
Bangladesh cricket administration underwent a dramatic change on Tuesday after the country’s National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the existing Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) led by Aminul Islam. Former national team captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the president of a newly formed 11-member interim committee that will temporarily manage the board.
The committee has been tasked with overseeing cricket operations in the country and organizing fresh elections for the Bangladesh Cricket Board within the next three months.
Election Probe Leads to Board Dissolution
The decision followed an investigation conducted by a committee formed by the National Sports Council. According to officials, the inquiry revealed multiple irregularities in the BCB elections held on October 6 last year.
NSC Sports Director Aminul Ehsan confirmed the findings and said the report has already been shared with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The global cricket governing body has also been informed about the formation of the temporary governing committee.
New Interim Committee Members
The newly appointed ad-hoc committee includes several former cricketers and cricket administrators.
Members of the committee include:
- Tamim Iqbal (President)
- Rashna Imam
- Miza Yasir Abbas
- Syed Ibrahim Ahmed
- Israfil Khosru
- Minhajul Abedin Nannu
- Athar Ali Khan
- Tanvir Chowdhury
- Salman Ispahani
- Rafiqul Islam Babu
- Fahim Sinha
This panel will remain in charge until new board elections are conducted.
T20 World Cup Dispute Triggered Crisis
The administrative upheaval comes months after Bangladesh became embroiled in controversy during preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup.
The Aminul Islam-led BCB refused to send the Bangladesh national team to India for the tournament amid rising diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The situation worsened after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) instructed IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the squad.
Bangladesh officials demanded that their matches in the tournament be moved to Sri Lanka instead of India. However, an independent security assessment by the ICC concluded that there were no safety concerns for teams playing in India.
Despite the assurances, the Bangladesh board maintained its position, which ultimately resulted in Bangladesh being removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland in Group C.
Tamim Iqbal Controversy
During the dispute, Tamim Iqbal had urged the board to consider the players’ interests and participate in the tournament.
His stance led to controversy after BCB Finance Committee Chairman M Nazmul Islam publicly accused him of acting as an “Indian agent.”
The comment triggered strong criticism from cricket fans and players across Bangladesh. Following the backlash, the BCB later announced that Najmul Islam had been removed from his role as chairman of the finance committee.
Future of Bangladesh Cricket
With Tamim Iqbal now leading the interim committee, the focus will be on restoring stability within the cricket board and preparing for new leadership through fresh elections.
