Users Flood Social Media with AI-Generated Ghibli-Inspired Images

OpenAI latest AI image generation technology, integrated into GPT-4o, has taken the internet by storm—this time by effortlessly replicating the iconic Studio Ghibli animation style. Users across social media platforms have been sharing their AI-generated Ghibli-style portraits and landscapes, sparking a viral trend.

What’s New in OpenAI Latest Image Generator?

On Tuesday, OpenAI launched its most advanced image generator yet, describing it as a “natively multimodal model capable of precise, accurate, and photorealistic outputs.” While the AI excels in realism and artistic adaptation, one unexpected outcome has been its remarkable ability to mimic the signature hand-drawn aesthetic of Studio Ghibli, the legendary animation studio behind classics like:

Sam Altman Reacts to the Ghibli Craze

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the viral trend in a post on X (formerly Twitter), humorously reflecting on his journey in AI development:

🔹 “Be me
🔹 Grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever
🔹 Mostly no one cares for the first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything
🔹 Wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘Look, I made you into a twink Ghibli style haha.’”

Altman even updated his X profile picture to a Ghibli-style AI-generated portrait of himself, further fueling the trend.

Studio Ghibli Response: A History of AI Skepticism

Despite the internet’s excitement, Studio Ghibli leadership has long been critical of AI-generated animation. Legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, the studio’s co-founder, has strongly opposed the use of artificial intelligence in art.

In a 2016 meeting, after being shown an AI-powered animation demo, Miyazaki expressed his disgust, saying:

🗣️ “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all.”

He also called AI animation “an insult to life itself.”

Earlier this month, over 400 industry professionals filed comments with the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy, accusing AI firms of lobbying for legal exemptions that would allow them to “freely exploit America’s creative industries.”

The Future of AI-Generated Art in Entertainment

With OpenAI AI-generated Ghibli-style artwork captivating social media, the debate over AI’s role in creative industries continues to intensify. While many embrace AI-assisted creativity, legendary artists like Miyazaki remain staunchly opposed to its use in traditional animation.

As AI technology becomes more advanced and widely accessible, its impact on art, copyright, and creative industries will be a hot topic for years to come.
