Joann, a well-known fabric and craft retail chain with over 800 locations nationwide, has announced the closure of hundreds of stores, including ten in Connecticut.

The company stated that this decision was not taken lightly, as it significantly impacts employees, customers, and local communities. The move comes after Joann filed for bankruptcy for the second time within a year.

Joann Store Closures in Connecticut

According to court filings, Joann is shutting down all its stores in Connecticut. Here is the list of affected locations:

  • Torrington – 39 South Main St.
  • Norwich – 117 Salem Tpke.
  • Southington – 774 Queen St.
  • Newington – 3105 Berlin Tpke.
  • Milford – 1405 Boston Post Rd.
  • Hamden – 2300 Dixwell Ave.
  • Manchester – 1440 Pleasant Valley Rd.
  • Enfield – 136 Elm St.
  • Clinton – 274 E Main St.
  • Brookfield – 143 Federal Rd.

Although Joann has not announced the exact closing dates, court documents indicate that the company aims to begin liquidation and sales immediately.

Why Is Joann Closing Stores?

Joann initially filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, and in January 2025, it declared that the business could shut down entirely if a new buyer wasn’t found. The company had been struggling financially, with rising debt and declining sales.

To manage its financial crisis, Joann aimed to:

  • Reduce debt by approximately $505 million
  • Secure about $132 million in new funding

However, with no strong acquisition bids, the company decided to proceed with store closures.

Joann Bankruptcy and Potential Sale

Joann Inc. has requested the bankruptcy court’s permission to sell the business, with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners LLC assessing its auction value. If a buyer is found, some stores may remain operational.

For now, customers and employees are left uncertain about the brand’s future.

What’s Next for Joann?

Joann has been a go-to retailer for crafters and fabric enthusiasts for decades. While some stores may survive under new ownership, the mass closures indicate a challenging road ahead for the brand.

Customers are advised to take advantage of clearance sales before stores shut down. Additionally, Joann’s online store may continue operating, depending on the company’s restructuring plans.
